Do I need to buy a MetroCard to ride the NYC Subway?
No, you don't. While the classic blue-and-yellow plastic MetroCards are still available at station vending machines, you no longer need one.
You can simply use OMNY (the MTA's contactless payment system) by tapping your physical credit/debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch directly at the turnstile. It accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, and contactless bank cards.
The fare is exactly the same as a standard subway ride ($2.90), and it automatically applies a weekly free-ride cap once you reach 12 paid trips within a 7-day period.
