Teen left to drown on Rockaway Beach

It is incredibly heartbreaking. On Tuesday afternoon (May 19, 2026), a **17-year-old boy went missing** after being swept away while swimming with friends off Rockaway Beach.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. near **Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway**.

Here is what we know about the situation so far:

 * **The Incident:** Witnesses reported that the teen ran into trouble in the water. His friends desperately tried to pull him out, but the heavy surf pulled him back in. Nearby beachgoers even formed a human chain in the water to try to find him.

 * **The Response:** A massive search was launched involving the FDNY, NYPD SCUBA and aviation units, marine teams, and drones. Divers faced very rough surf and strong winds while searching the area.

 * **Current Status:** The active search was suspended late Tuesday night due to darkness and dangerous conditions, and it resumed on Wednesday morning.

> **A Critical Reminder:** Lifeguards were **not on duty** because New York City beaches do not officially open for the season until Saturday (Memorial Day weekend).

The Rockaways are notorious for sudden drop-offs and intense rip currents, which become incredibly dangerous when there are no lifeguards on standby to monitor the water. It’s a tragic reminder of how quickly a nice day at the beach can take a devastating turn.
