Americans find their own way out of the war zone

As of early March 2026, the situation for Americans in Iran has become extremely critical following the launch of U.S. combat operations (referred to as Operation Epic Fury) on February 28, 2026. This has led to a chaotic scramble for many U.S. citizens—many of whom are dual nationals—trying to exit a country where the U.S. has no diplomatic presence.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory and a specific order to "DEPART NOW" for Iran and 14 other Middle Eastern countries.

Current Status of Exit Routes

Because the U.S. and Israel are in active conflict with Iran, traditional travel has largely collapsed:

 * Aviation: Most commercial flights have been canceled due to airspace closures and the threat of missile/drone strikes.

 * Land Borders: The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran is advising citizens to leave by land to Armenia (via the Agarak/Norduz crossing) or Türkiye, but only "if safe to do so."

 * Shelter-in-Place: For those unable to reach a border, the current official directive is to shelter-in-place in a secure location and maintain a low profile.

Major Challenges for Americans

The "way out" is complicated by several high-stakes factors:

 * Dual Nationality: Iran does not recognize dual citizenship. U.S.-Iranian citizens must exit using Iranian passports and are treated solely as Iranian citizens, making them highly vulnerable to questioning or detention.

 * Lack of Consular Support: There is no U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Americans must rely on the Swiss Embassy (Foreign Interests Section) for limited emergency assistance, or contact the U.S. Embassy in Bern, Switzerland.

 * Exit Bans: The Iranian government often imposes exit bans on individuals, which can trap people for years regardless of the current military conflict.

 * Identification Risk: Showing a U.S. passport at a checkpoint can be sufficient grounds for arrest or "wrongful detention" under the current state of hostilities.

Recommended Safety Actions

If you or someone you know is currently navigating this, the State Department suggests:

 * Enroll in STEP: Use the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive real-time security updates.

 * WhatsApp Channel: The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran now has a dedicated WhatsApp channel for consular information.

 * Emergency Plan: Have a plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance, including stockpiling food, water, and medication.
