Disruptions continue at Penn Station

If you are trying to navigate your commute right now, it is a massive headache. A series of infrastructure fires in the Penn Station tunnels has triggered widespread delays, cancellations, and diversions across multiple transit networks.

The chaos stems from two distinct, back-to-back incidents in the tunnels owned by Amtrak: an electrical feeder fire in the East River Tunnel, followed closely by a maintenance vehicle fire and minor collision in the North River Tunnel. Because these incidents damaged critical infrastructure, **Amtrak has announced that services for both Amtrak and NJ Transit will be significantly reduced.**

Here is the breakdown of how the different rail lines are impacted and how you can get around it:

### Service Impacts by Carrier

 * **Amtrak & NJ Transit:** Running on heavily reduced schedules. Delays of 60 minutes or more and sudden cancellations are expected to persist. Many NJ Transit Midtown Direct trains are being actively diverted to Hoboken Terminal instead of entering Manhattan.

 * **Long Island Rail Road (LIRR):** Operating with extremely limited service into and out of Penn Station. Most westbound trains are being terminated at Jamaica or rerouted.

### Alternative Routes & Cross-Honoring

To keep people moving, the transit agencies have established extensive cross-honoring agreements. If you have a rail ticket, you can use it on alternative transit options at no extra cost:

 * **For Long Island Commuters:** The MTA is routing the bulk of LIRR passengers to **Grand Central Madison** or **Atlantic Terminal** in Brooklyn. NYC subways are also cross-honoring LIRR tickets to help you transition from those hubs.

 * **For New Jersey Commuters:** Utilize the **PATH train** at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken, or 33rd Street. NJ Transit rail tickets are also valid on NJ Transit buses and private carrier buses.

> **Commuter Tip:** If you are heading out east, save yourself the stress of Penn Station entirely and head straight to Grand Central Madison, which is remaining open overnight to handle the overflow traffic.

Transit officials and local leaders are furious with Amtrak over these repeated infrastructure failures, but repairs are expected to take time. Make sure to download your carrier's app (MTA TrainTime or NJ Transit) to check real-time departure boards before you head to any station.
