Metro-North has several new trains and locomotives coming into service or planned:
* Siemens Charger Dual-Mode Locomotives (SC42-DM):
* These new 4,200-horsepower locomotives began passenger service in September 2025 on the Hudson Line.
* They are dual-mode, meaning they can operate on both diesel-electric power and third-rail electric power.
* They are more environmentally friendly, reducing airborne pollutants by over 85% compared to the old fleet.
* They can operate under electric power on the entire 102 miles of Metro-North's third-rail territory, significantly farther than the older locomotives they replace.
* They will replace the existing GE P32AC-DM locomotives.
* Battery- and Electric-Powered Locomotives (Planned):
* Metro-North plans to purchase battery- and electric-powered locomotives for use on the Penn Station Access project.
* These will be the first of their kind to operate passenger trains in North America, offering clean, zero-emission service.
* M-9A Railcars (Future):
* The MTA has approved the purchase of new M-9A electric multiple unit (EMU) railcars, with 156 of them destined for Metro-North.
* These are intended to replace the aging M-3 cars, which are beyond their service life.
* The first pilot cars are expected to be delivered in 2029, with the full fleet deployed by 2032.
Metro-North also operates a large fleet of M-8 electric multiple unit (EMU) cars on the New Haven Line, which have been in service since 2011 and are currently their most modern self-propelled train cars.
