Here is your quick-vlog guide to navigating New York City like a pro, covering everything from staying safe to eating well and dressing for the elements.
NYC Tourist Scams to Avoid
New York is generally safe, but street hustlers are experts at exploiting a traveler's politeness. Keep your wits about you with these common traps:
The CD / QR Code Hustle: A "musician" steps into your path and hands you a CD or a card with a QR code, saying it’s a gift or asking you to check out their track. The second it’s in your hand, they demand a $20 "donation" and will get loud or bring friends over to intimidate you if you refuse. The Rule: Never accept anything handed to you on the street.
The Fake "Statue of Liberty" Ticket Sellers: Near Battery Park and the subway exits, you’ll see people in official-looking vests shouting about Statue of Liberty tickets. They will sell you highly marked-up tickets for generic harbor cruises that don't actually dock at the island.
The Rule: If you want to go to the island, buy only from the official Statue City Cruises site. If you just want a view, take the Staten Island Ferry—it is 100% free, and anyone trying to sell you a ticket for it is scamming you.
The Aggressive Times Square Characters: Costumed characters (Elmos, Spidermen, etc.) will push past you, throw an arm around you or your kid, and pose for a photo. Once the photo is taken, they will aggressively demand a $5–$10 tip per character. The Rule: Just keep walking. If you genuinely want a photo, negotiate the tip before you take it.
The "Dropped/Broken Item" Scam: Someone walks past you, intentionally bumps into your shoulder, and drops a bag containing a "shattered" bottle of alcohol or glasses. They’ll loudly blame you for ruining their expensive item and demand immediate cash.
The Rule: Keep moving and offer to call the police to settle the report. They will vanish instantly.
The Ultimate Chinatown Food Crawl
Chinatown is one of the best food neighborhoods in the world if you know where to look. Ditch the sit-down tourist traps and hit these quick-service legends:
Stop 1: The Soup Dumpling Classic
Where: Joe's Shanghai (Pell St) or Shu Jiao Fu Zhou (Grand St).
What to get: Pork and crab Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) or the insanely cheap peanut butter noodles at Shu Jiao Fu Zhou.
Stop 2: The $5 Pork Buns
Where: Mei Lai Wah (Bayard St).
What to get: The legendary Baked Roast Pork Bun. The crust is sweet and flaky, and the pork is savory. Expect a line, but it moves fast.
Stop 3: Street Cart Skewers
Where: The small, smoky street carts parked along Grand Street or Forsyth Street.
What to get: $2–$3 charcoal-grilled lamb, beef, or squid skewers seasoned heavily with cumin and chili flakes.
Stop 4: Dessert Change-up
Where: Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (Bayard St).
What to get: Uniquely Asian flavors like Black Sesame, Taro, or Egg Custard ice cream.
Pro Tip: Bring plenty of cash! A lot of the most authentic, hole-in-the-wall spots in Chinatown do not accept credit cards or mobile payments.
NYC Weather & Packing Prep
New York is an outdoor city—you will easily clock 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day, meaning your weather defense starts from the ground up.
Footwear is Non-Negotiable: Pack your most comfortable, broken-in sneakers. Avoid mesh shoes if rain is on the horizon; the wet city puddles are unforgiving.
The Umbrella Strategy: Cheap street corner umbrellas will instantly flip inside out due to the wind tunnels created by the skyscrapers. Invest in a compact, wind-resistant travel umbrella, or opt for a sleek rain jacket with a solid hood.
The Subway Temperature Shock: The weather outside doesn't match the weather below ground. In the warmer months, subway stations can feel like actual saunas, only for the train cars themselves to be blasted with freezing air conditioning. Always carry a light layer (like a denim jacket or flannel shirt) you can easily throw on or strip off.
Pack a Cross-body Bag: Keep your hands free for navigation and snacks. A secure bag that sits on your chest keeps your valuables safe on crowded subway cars and protects your belongings from sudden downpours.
