The British Rule and Revolution
In 1664, the English seized control of the colony without a fight and renamed it New York, after the King’s brother, the Duke of York. Under British rule, the city grew as a pivotal commercial port. During the American Revolution, New York was strategically vital; it fell to the British early in the war and served as their military headquarters until 1783. Following the war, New York briefly served as the first official capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790, and George Washington was inaugurated as President at Federal Hall in Wall Street.
