History Of New York
From a quiet trading post to the premier economic and cultural hub of the world, New York City’s history is a story of constant reinvention.
The Early Beginnings and New Amsterdam
Before European arrival, the region was inhabited by the Lenape people, who utilized its waterways for fishing and trade. In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson mapped the region for the Dutch East India Company. By 1624, the Dutch established a permanent trading post, naming the settlement New Amsterdam. Infamously, in 1626, Peter Minuit "purchased" Manhattan Island from the Lenape for trade goods worth about 60 guilders.
