Another Massive Fire at Penn Station

 It is completely understandable to be frustrated—this morning is a total mess, especially since it feels like deja vu after the East River Tunnel fire just two weeks ago.

An Amtrak maintenance/work train caught fire on Track 11 inside one of the **Hudson River Tunnels** around 1:30 AM. While the FDNY got it under control by 4:05 AM, the fire severely damaged the **overhead wiring**, which has completely paralyzed the morning commute for thousands of people. Five transit workers were injured, including two with serious injuries.

The damage has severely altered service for the Friday morning commute.

### Current Service Disruptions

 * **NJ Transit:** All rail service is **completely suspended** between Penn Station New York and Newark Penn Station.

 * **Amtrak:** Service between New York and Newark (and points south) is entirely suspended, with officials warning that cancellations and severe delays will last **until at least the afternoon**.

 * **LIRR:** Service is running with heavy modifications. Eleven entire lines are being **diverted away from Penn Station to Grand Central Madison** or Long Island City. Expect cancellations and massive delays on any remaining Penn-bound trains.

### Your Best Alternate Options Right Now

If you absolutely have to get into or out of Manhattan, transit agencies are cross-honoring tickets, but you will need to re-route:

 * **From New Jersey:**

   * **Midtown Direct** trains are being diverted to **Hoboken Terminal**. From there, you can take the **PATH train** into Manhattan (33rd Street or World Trade Center) or catch a private carrier bus.

   * You can also take NJ Transit rail to **Newark Penn Station** and transfer to the PATH train from there.

 * **From Long Island:**

   * Head directly to **Grand Central Madison** or **Atlantic Terminal** in Brooklyn instead of Penn Station. The MTA is adding extra trains to Grand Central to handle the overflow, and NYC subways are cross-honoring LIRR tickets to help you navigate once you're in the city.
