Mexico under attack

It definitely feels that way right now. While "under attack" usually implies an invasion by another country, Mexico is currently experiencing a massive domestic security crisis following a high-stakes military operation today, Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The Mexican government has confirmed that they have killed Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and one of the world's most wanted men. In retaliation, the cartel has launched a series of coordinated attacks and blockades across several states.

Current Situation in Mexico

 * The Killing of "El Mencho": He was killed during a special forces raid in Tapalpa, Jalisco. He reportedly died from injuries while being airlifted to Mexico City.

 * **"Code Red" in Jalisco: Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro has activated a "Code Red" emergency protocol. Violent clashes, explosions, and shootouts have been reported in Guadalajara, Zapopan, and Puerto Vallarta.

 * Narco-Blockades: Cartel members are torching buses, trucks, and gas stations to block highways in at least eight states, including Jalisco, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Michoacán, Colima, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas.

 * Airport Chaos: There have been scenes of panic at the Guadalajara Airport, and some airlines (including Air Canada) have suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta.

Official Travel & Safety Warnings

The U.S. and Canadian governments have issued urgent alerts for their citizens currently in Mexico:

 * Shelter in Place: U.S. citizens in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León are being told to remain indoors and away from windows until further notice.

 * School Closures: The state of Jalisco has already canceled classes for tomorrow, Monday, Feb 23.

 * Keep a Low Profile: If you are in a tourist area like Puerto Vallarta, stay within your resort or hotel and follow the instructions of local security.

Is this an international war?

No, it is not an invasion from another country. However, the scale of the violence is extreme. This operation was reportedly a joint effort involving U.S. intelligence, which has led to increased tensions along the border and within Mexico's major cities.
