Santos sentence gets commuted

President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of former congressman George Santos.

The commutation was announced on Friday, October 17, 2025, and ordered the immediate release of Santos from prison, where he was serving a sentence for federal fraud and identity theft charges.

A commutation reduces the severity of a sentence (like the time served in prison) but does not overturn the conviction or necessarily restore civil rights, which a full pardon would do.

Santos was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey, after serving less than three months of his sentence.
