l stop accepting coins as fare payment beginning in 2026.
This change is part of the MTA's full transition to OMNY (One Metro New York), their contactless tap-and-go payment system, which is set to completely replace the MetroCard by the end of 2025.
After the change takes effect in 2026, riders will need to use an OMNY card, a contactless credit/debit card, or a smartphone/wearable device to pay their bus fare. Coins will still be accepted at OMNY card vending machines in subway stations and at retailers that sell the cards.
