The Dela
corte Theater is the open-air theater located in Central Park. It is the long-time home of the Public Theater's "Free Shakespeare in the Park" productions.
The theater was conceived by Joseph Papp as a way to make theater accessible to everyone. It officially opened on June 18, 1962, with a production of The Merchant of Venice.
The theater recently underwent a major renovation and has reopened as of August 2025. The revitalization project aimed to make the theater more welcoming, accessible, and sustainable for future generations.
