Gateway between Westchester & Rockland County

The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is a state-of-the-art, twin-span cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Hudson River in New York. It connects Rockland and Westchester counties, located approximately 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.

Here are some key facts about the bridge:

 * Replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge: It replaced the original Tappan Zee Bridge, which opened in 1955 and had exceeded its intended lifespan and traffic capacity. The new bridge was designed for a 100-year service life.

 * Length: It is 3.1 miles long, making it the longest bridge in New York State.

 * Design: It's a twin-span, cable-stayed bridge with eight general traffic lanes, plus dedicated bus lanes and shoulders for emergency access.

 * Shared Use Path: The bridge features a 3.6-mile shared bicycle and pedestrian path on the northern side of the westbound span, which is one of the longest in the country. This path includes six scenic overlooks, interpretive displays, and public art.

 * Tolls: Tolls are collected electronically, primarily in the southbound direction. Rates vary depending on E-ZPass usage (New York E-ZPass, Non-NY E-ZPass, or Tolls by Mail) and vehicle type. There are also commuter and resident discount plans available.

 * Cost: The project cost approximately $3.98 billion, making it one of the largest transportation design-build contracts in the United States.

 * Name: The bridge is named after Mario M. Cuomo, who served as the 52nd Governor of New York from 1983 to 1994.
